Tradition(s) and individual talent in Sinhala writing

It has always been my opinion that the literary output in Sinhala is qualitatively much superior to that in English. The kind of artistic experimentation - and successful experimentation at that - one finds in contemporary Sri Lankan writing in Sinhala is both unprecedented and impressive. When on the one hand novelists such as Liyanage Amarakeerthi (‘Atawaka Putthu’) and Sunethra Rajakarunanayake (‘Podu Purushaya’) amongst others, have brought into their novelistic craft elements from post-realistic fiction and improvised them successfully, on the other, acclaimed writers of short-fiction such as Ajith Thilakasena, Nissanka Wijemaanne and K. K Saman Kumara, have absolutely radicalised Sinhala short-fiction both in terms of style and content.
